To convert CGPA to percentage under the CBSE rule, multiply your CGPA by 9.5. For example, a CGPA of 8.2 becomes 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%. This is the formula CBSE and Delhi University publish for CBCS marksheets, and it takes under a minute once you know the three steps below.
What Is the ×9.5 Rule for CGPA to Percentage Conversion?
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is a score on a 10-point scale. Percentage is the same performance expressed out of 100. The ×9.5 rule is CBSE’s published conversion: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5.
It was introduced by CBSE when Class X moved to grading. Delhi University applies the same factor for CBCS-based degrees. It is not a universal law — universities like VTU and Mumbai University use their own formulas — but for CBSE students and DU CBCS graduates it is the official method, and it is the most commonly used conversion in India.
Why Multiply by 9.5 and Not 10?
This is the question almost every student asks. The factor 9.5 comes from the top grade band of the CBSE grading scale. The highest grade (A1, grade point 10) covered the marks band 91–100. The average of that band is about 95 marks.
Since a perfect CGPA of 10 represents roughly 95 marks (not 100), the conversion factor becomes:
95 ÷ 10 = 9.5
So multiplying your CGPA by 9.5 maps the full 10-point scale onto the realistic marks range of 0–95%, instead of 0–100%. That is why a perfect 10 CGPA converts to 95%, not 100%.
How Do You Convert CGPA to Percentage? (3 Steps)
Step 1: Find your CGPA
Check your final marksheet or provisional certificate for your cumulative CGPA.
Step 2: Multiply the CGPA by 9.5
Take your CGPA and multiply it by 9.5. You can do this on any phone calculator:
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
Step 3: Round the result to two decimals
Percentages are usually reported to two decimal places. For example, 78.375% becomes 78.38%. Most application forms accept one or two decimals.

Worked Examples (Hand-Verified)
Example 1: CGPA of 8.5
8.5 × 9.5 = 80.75%
Arithmetic: 8.5 × 9.5 = 80.75. So an 8.5 CGPA equals 80.75%.
Example 2: CGPA of 8.2
8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%
Arithmetic: 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.90. So an 8.2 CGPA equals 77.9%.
Example 3: CGPA of 8.25
8.25 × 9.5 = 78.375%
Arithmetic: 8.25 × 9.5 = 78.375, rounded to 78.38%.
Example 4: Converting back — percentage to CGPA
To reverse the formula, divide the percentage by 9.5: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5. For example, 76% → 76 ÷ 9.5 = 8.0 CGPA.
CGPA to Percentage Quick Reference Table (CBSE ×9.5)
| CGPA | Percentage |
|---|---|
| 10.0 | 95.00% |
| 9.5 | 90.25% |
| 9.0 | 85.50% |
| 8.5 | 80.75% |
| 8.0 | 76.00% |
| 7.5 | 71.25% |
| 7.0 | 66.50% |
| 6.5 | 61.75% |
| 6.0 | 57.00% |
This table covers the most common CGPA values. Any value in between follows the same rule — just multiply by 9.5.
When Should You NOT Use the ×9.5 Rule?
The ×9.5 rule is correct for CBSE and DU CBCS. But many universities publish their own formulas, and using 9.5 when your university says otherwise can misstate your percentage on an application:
- Anna University uses CGPA × 10
- VTU uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10
- JNTU Hyderabad / GTU use (CGPA − 0.5) × 10
- Mumbai University (CBCS) uses 7.1 × CGPI + 11
- SPPU Pune uses (CGPA × 8) + 10
Always check your university’s official conversion before filling in an application form. Calcrio’s detailed guide on CGPA to percentage formulas for different universities compares all six with worked examples, so you can see exactly how your 8.0 changes across CBSE, VTU, Anna and Mumbai.
Why Do Some Websites Tell You to Multiply CGPA by 10?
You will find plenty of pages claiming “CGPA × 10 = percentage.” That shortcut is correct only where a university officially uses it — Anna University does, for example. For CBSE students it is wrong.
The ×10 advice spreads because it is simple and because it happens to be right for Anna University students.
Is the ×9.5 Conversion Exact?
The ×9.5 rule is CBSE’s official mapping, not a reconstruction of your actual marks. Your real board marks averaged to a grade, and 9.5 maps the grade back to the band average.
What this means in practice: if your transcript or board certificate prints both a CGPA and a percentage, use the printed percentage.
Does the ×9.5 Rule Apply Outside CBSE?
The ×9.5 rule is published by CBSE and adopted by Delhi University for CBCS degrees. It does not automatically apply elsewhere:
- State boards and ICSE: check your board’s official conversion circular. Do not assume 9.5 — some boards publish their own formula.
- Universities: most publish their own formula (VTU, Anna, Mumbai, JNTU, SPPU all do — compared in detail here).
- No published formula: if your institution publishes no conversion at all, report the CGPA exactly as awarded and leave the percentage blank.
Common Mistakes Students Make
- Multiplying by 10. A CGPA of 8.2 is not 82% under CBSE — it is 77.9%. The ×10 shortcut only works at universities that officially use it.
- Mixing up SGPA and CGPA. SGPA is one semester’s GPA; CGPA is the cumulative average across all semesters. Job forms almost always ask for CGPA.
- Self-converting for US applications. US universities evaluate your CGPA on their own 4.0 scale, and agencies like WES do their own conversion.
Reverse Lookup: What CGPA Do You Need for a Target Percentage?
Sometimes the question runs the other way — a job posting asks for “75% and above” and you need to know the CGPA equivalent. Divide the percentage by 9.5:
- For 75%: 75 ÷ 9.5 = 7.89 CGPA — so you need roughly a 7.9 or higher.
- For 60% (a common minimum-eligibility mark): 60 ÷ 9.5 = 6.32 CGPA.
Compare your actual CGPA against that threshold. If you are at 8.2 (77.9%), you clear a 75% cutoff with room to spare.
FAQ
How to convert CGPA to percentage in one step?
Multiply your CGPA by 9.5. That is the CBSE rule: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. An 8.5 CGPA gives 80.75%.
Why is the multiplication factor 9.5 instead of 10?
Because the top CBSE grade band (91–100) averages about 95 marks, so a perfect 10 CGPA maps to 95%, giving 95 ÷ 10 = 9.5.
What is 8.4 CGPA in percentage?
Under the CBSE ×9.5 rule, 8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8%. Verify your university’s official formula first if it is not CBSE.
Can I convert my CGPA to percentage myself for a job application?
Yes, for Indian job applications the ×9.5 rule is standard for CBSE/DU CBCS students. For other universities, use their published formula. For US university applications, do not self-convert — report your CGPA as awarded.
How do I convert percentage back to CGPA?
Divide by 9.5: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5. For example, 76% ÷ 9.5 = 8.0 CGPA.
Does a 10 CGPA mean 100%?
No. Under the ×9.5 rule, 10 CGPA = 95%. The scale maps to realistic marks, not the absolute ceiling of 100.
