What each position in the Destiny Matrix chart means
A Destiny Matrix chart is not just a collection of numbers — it is a map, and every number is read differently depending on where it sits. A 9 in the center means something different from a 9 in the karmic tail, even though the energy is the same. If you already know how to build the chart by hand (if not, start with our step-by-step calculation guide), this guide walks you through each key position in the order you should actually read them.
We will use the same worked example throughout: the chart for March 14, 1990 — A = 14, B = 3, C = 19, D = 9, center = 9. If you have your own chart ready, even better: you can check your chart with our free calculator and read along with your own numbers. Look up what each arcana means in our 22 arcana meanings guide as we go.
The reading order: where to start
Experienced readers do not start at a random corner. The usual reading order is:
- Center — the comfort zone, the core of the person
- Point A — the portrait, how they come across
- Talent zone — gifts from birth and from the past
- Money and love lines — the practical channels of life
- Karmic tail — the repeating lessons
- Purposes and personal year — where life is heading
Let us take each one in turn.
The center — your comfort zone
The number in the exact middle of the chart (A + B + C + D, reduced) is the comfort zone: the energy the soul strives toward, what feels most natural, and — importantly — how other people tend to read you.
For our example: 14 + 3 + 19 + 9 = 45 → 9 (the Hermit). A person with 9 in the center is read by the world as deep, thoughtful, and a little private. They recharge in solitude, think things through before speaking, and feel most comfortable researching, writing, or advising rather than performing. The minus side shows up as withdrawal — disappearing when life demands engagement.
Because it is the hub everything connects to, many readers glance at the center before anything else. It answers the question: “What is this person like at their core?”
Point A — the portrait zone (left corner)
Point A holds your day of birth — for our example, 14 (Temperance). This is the portrait zone: the qualities you arrived with, the first impression you make, and an energy you can always lean on.
With 14 in the portrait zone, the person comes across as balanced, calm, and easy to be around — a natural diplomat who smooths tension. In its positive expression, this is healing energy: people feel better after talking to them. In its negative, it becomes conflict-avoidance — swallowing their own needs to keep the peace.
Read the center and the portrait together: in our example, Hermit energy at the core with Temperance on the surface — a deeply private person who presents as calm and approachable.
The talent zone (top of the chart)
The talent zone sits on the vertical line above the center: point B (the month) plus the two points below it toward the center. For March 14, 1990: 3 (the Empress), 12 (the Hanged Man), 15 (the Devil).
This zone describes gifts — one from birth and one carried from the past. Point B itself (3, the Empress) is your link with creativity and intuition: the person is wired to nurture ideas and people. The points below deepen the picture: 12 (Hanged Man) suggests a talent for seeing situations from an unusual angle, and 15 (Devil) gives persuasive power — the ability to hold attention and move people.
A useful way to read the talent zone is as a career compass: it shows the kinds of work where your natural wiring does the heavy lifting. For more on how numbers express themselves as strengths, see our 22 arcana meanings list.
The money line (right of the center)
The money line runs to the right of the center. Its entry point — the point next to the center on corner C’s line — is 10 (the Wheel of Fortune) in our example.
The money line describes how money comes in, what work suits you, and what blocks the flow. With the Wheel of Fortune at the entry, income tends to arrive in waves and cycles rather than a steady salary — good months and lean months. The lesson is to ride the cycles instead of fighting them: build reserves in the good times and stay flexible in the slow ones.
The full money line is a three-energy channel (entry, middle, and balance point), and it is usually read together with the love line as a pair. Both deserve more detail than fits here — we cover them in depth in our money line and love line guide.
The love line (below the center)
The love line runs below the center. Its entry point — the point next to the center on corner D’s line — is 18 (the Moon) for our example date.
This line describes the relationship pattern: what you attract, what you need from a partner, and what trips you up in love. With the Moon at the entry, relationships run on deep emotional currents — strong intuition about a partner, but also a tendency toward anxiety, jealousy, or seeing illusions instead of the real person. The growth lesson is clarity: naming feelings honestly instead of letting them run the show.
Point D and the karmic tail (bottom of the chart)
Point D — the bottom corner — is your main task to work through. For our example it is 9 (the Hermit). In this method, D is understood as an energy from the past that starts out in its negative expression at birth and becomes a strength over time: early on, our example person withdraws too much; with growth, the same energy becomes wisdom and depth.
D never stands alone. Together with the two points above it on the vertical line, it forms the karmic tail: three numbers showing which situations keep repeating until the lesson is learned. Here the tail is 9 (D), 9, and 18 reading upward — a repeated pattern of withdrawing from emotional situations (Hermit + Moon) instead of facing them. When the same scenario keeps recurring in your life — the same kind of conflict, the same kind of partner — this is the part of the chart that explains it.
Many readers start their work with the tail, because its energies sit at the entries to the money and love lines — working on them shifts both practical channels at once.
Your purposes and your personal year
The long diagonals of the chart combine into purpose numbers:
- Sky line (spiritual tasks) = B + D = 3 + 9 = 12
- Earth line (material tasks) = A + C = 14 + 19 = 33 → 6
- Personal purpose = sky + earth = 12 + 6 = 18 — the main task of ages 20–40
- Father’s line + mother’s line = 9 + 9 = 18 — the social purpose of ages 40–60
- Spiritual purpose = personal + social = 18 + 18 = 36 → 9
In our example, the personal and social purposes both land on 18 (the Moon): a life path about learning emotional honesty — first in the personal sphere (20–40), then in the wider social sphere (40–60). The spiritual purpose, 9 (the Hermit), echoes the center: a life that keeps returning to depth and inner wisdom.
Finally, the chart has age labels 0–70 around its edge: the point by your current age shows the energy of this year of life. That yearly energy is one reason many people recalculate their chart reading each birthday rather than treating it as a one-time snapshot.
Frequently asked questions
What does it mean if the same arcana appears several times in my chart?
It means that energy is a dominant theme of your life. In our example, 9 appears in the center, at point D, and twice more in the tail — the Hermit is clearly the strongest signal in this chart. Repetition amplifies: the strengths show up more strongly, but so do the shadow sides. When an arcana repeats across different positions, read each position’s meaning separately, then notice the common thread.
Can my chart change?
No — the chart is calculated from your birth date, which is fixed, so the numbers never change. What changes is you: the same arcana can express in its positive or negative form, and the chart is really a map of which direction you are moving. Your personal-year energy does change each year, which is why the chart keeps offering fresh insight over time.
Read your own chart position by position
The fastest way to make this real is to do it with your own numbers. Run your birth date through the Destiny Matrix chart calculator, then walk the positions in reading order — center, portrait, talents, money and love, karmic tail, purposes — looking up each arcana in our 22 arcana meanings guide as you go. If you built your chart by hand, double-check the arithmetic first with our hand-calculation guide — one early slip shifts every position downstream.
