Quick Answer

How Is Zakat Calculated?

Quick Answer: Add up all your zakatable assets (gold, silver, cash, bank balances, savings, business stock and money owed to you), subtract debts due now, and if the total is above the nisab and has been held for one lunar year, pay 2.5%. For example, net wealth of Rs 1,000,000 means Zakat of Rs 25,000.

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam and an obligation on every adult Muslim who is sahib-e-nisab. The Calcrio Zakat Calculator is built for Pakistan: it uses tola as well as grams, works in rupees, and lets you enter the current sarafa rates for gold and silver so the nisab is always up to date.

How to Use the Zakat Calculator

  1. Enter gold and silver you own (jewellery, coins, bars) in tola or grams.
  2. Enter today's rates per tola. Gold and silver prices change daily, so check your local sarafa bazaar or the All Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Association rate.
  3. Add cash and bank balances, National Savings certificates, prize bonds, and the resale value of business stock.
  4. Add money owed to you that you expect to recover.
  5. Enter liabilities due now, such as unpaid bills, loans instalments currently due, and wages owed.
  6. Choose the nisab standard and press Calculate.

Nisab for Zakat in Pakistan

The nisab is the minimum wealth on which Zakat becomes obligatory. Classical scholars set it at:

StandardTolaGramsNisab value
Silver52.5 tola612.36 g52.5 × silver rate
Gold7.5 tola87.48 g7.5 × gold rate

Most Pakistani scholars and the Hanafi school recommend the silver nisab when a person owns mixed assets (some gold plus cash or savings), because it is lower and benefits more of the poor. If you own only gold and nothing else, the gold nisab of 7.5 tola applies. One tola equals 11.664 grams.

Zakat Formula and Example

Net Wealth = Gold + Silver + Cash + Bank + Savings + Stock + Receivables − Current Debts
Zakat = Net Wealth × 2.5% (if Net Wealth ≥ Nisab)
ItemAmount (PKR)
3 tola gold at Rs 429,0001,287,000
10 tola silver at Rs 6,10061,000
Cash at home150,000
Bank savings400,000
Savings certificates200,000
Money owed to you50,000
Less: debts due−100,000
Net zakatable wealth2,048,000
2,048,000 × 0.025 = Rs 51,200 Zakat

The silver nisab here is 52.5 × 6,100 = Rs 320,250 (rates as of mid-October 2026; enter today’s rate), so Zakat is clearly due.

What Is Zakatable and What Is Not

ZakatableGold, silver, cash, bank deposits, savings certificates, shares held for trade, business inventory, receivables.
Not zakatableYour home, personal car, furniture, clothes, tools of trade, household items.
DebtsDeduct only amounts due now, not the full remaining balance of a long-term loan.

Rental property itself is not zakatable, but saved rental income is. For shares, Zakat is usually paid on the market value of shares bought for trading; for long-term investments, scholars often allow paying on the company's zakatable assets per share.

Zakat Deduction by Banks in Pakistan

Under the Zakat and Ushr Ordinance 1980, banks in Pakistan deduct 2.5% Zakat at source from savings accounts and certain deposits on the first day of Ramadan if the balance is above the nisab announced by the government. If you have already paid through bank deduction, subtract that amount from the Zakat calculated here. You may submit a Zakat exemption declaration (form CZ-50) to your bank before Ramadan if you prefer to pay Zakat yourself or are not liable under your fiqh.

Note: This calculator provides a general estimate. For inheritance, business partnerships, agricultural produce (Ushr) or complex holdings, consult a qualified mufti or Islamic scholar.

How to Calculate Zakat in Pakistan (Step by Step)

Short answer: Add the market value of your gold and silver, cash, bank balances, savings certificates, business stock and recoverable loans, then subtract debts that are due now. If the net total is at or above the nisab (52.5 tola of silver or 7.5 tola of gold at today's rate) and you have held it for one Islamic year, pay 2.5%. Rs 2,000,000 of net zakatable wealth means Rs 50,000 Zakat.

  1. Fix your Zakat date (the Hijri date you first became sahib-e-nisab, or 1 Ramadan for convenience).
  2. Weigh your gold and silver and note the tola or gram amount.
  3. Check today's sarafa rate per tola for gold and silver.
  4. Add cash in hand, all bank balances, prize bonds and savings certificates.
  5. Add the sale value of business stock and money others owe you that you expect to recover.
  6. Subtract bills, instalments and debts that are due now.
  7. Compare the net amount with the nisab; if it is above, multiply by 2.5%.

Gold Nisab vs. Silver Nisab: Which One Applies?

EffectMore people pay Zakat; better for the poorHigher threshold
Scholarly view in PakistanPreferred by most Hanafi scholars and Darul Uloom fatwasApplies in the gold-only case

Because the gap between the two thresholds is now about ten times, the choice matters a lot. A family with Rs 500,000 in a bank account and a few grams of gold would owe nothing under the gold nisab but would owe Zakat under the silver nisab. If you are unsure, ask a mufti from your own school of thought.

Zakat on Gold per Tola: Quick Table

Zakat on gold is 2.5% of its current market value, not the price you paid. The table uses a sample 24-karat rate of Rs 429,000 per tola; replace it with today's rate in the calculator.

Gold ownedValue at Rs 429,000/tolaZakat (2.5%)
1 tolaRs 429,000Rs 10,725
2.5 tolaRs 1,072,500Rs 26,813
5 tolaRs 2,145,000Rs 53,625
7.5 tolaRs 3,217,500Rs 80,438
10 tolaRs 4,290,000Rs 107,250

22-Karat and 21-Karat Jewellery

Most Pakistani jewellery is 22K or 21K, not pure 24K. Multiply the weight by the purity ratio (22 ÷ 24 = 0.9167; 21 ÷ 24 = 0.875) to get the pure-gold equivalent, or use the 22K rate quoted by your jeweller. Stones, lacquer and making charges are not included in the gold value.

Zakat on Cash and Bank Savings: Quick Table

Net zakatable wealthZakat due
Rs 500,000 (5 lakh)Rs 12,500
Rs 1,000,000 (10 lakh)Rs 25,000
Rs 2,500,000 (25 lakh)Rs 62,500
Rs 5,000,000 (50 lakh)Rs 125,000
Rs 10,000,000 (1 crore)Rs 250,000

These amounts assume the total is above the nisab and has completed a lunar year. Profit earned during the year is added to the balance on your Zakat date. Many scholars advise donating any interest (riba) received to charity without the intention of reward, separate from Zakat.

Special Cases: Business, Shares, Pension and Loans

Business Stock

Count the current sale value of finished goods, raw materials meant for sale and cash in the business. Fixed assets such as shop premises, machinery and vehicles are not zakatable.

Shares and Mutual Funds

If you bought shares on the Pakistan Stock Exchange to trade, pay 2.5% of their market value. For long-term holdings, many scholars allow paying on the zakatable portion of the company's assets. Many mutual funds deduct Zakat at source for Muslim Pakistani investors who have not filed a CZ-50.

Provident Fund and Pension

Compulsory provident fund deductions are generally not zakatable until you receive the money. Voluntary contributions you control are usually treated like savings. Pension that has not been paid out is not counted.

Committee (BC) and Loans Given

Money you have paid into a committee is counted as your asset; once you receive the committee payout, the amounts still owed by you are a liability. Loans you gave to others are included if you reasonably expect repayment.

Who Can Receive Zakat?

The Quran (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:60) names eight categories of recipients, including the poor (fuqara), the needy (masakin), those in debt, travellers in need and those working to collect and distribute Zakat. In Pakistan, Zakat can be given directly to deserving relatives (other than parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren and spouse), neighbours, or through registered welfare organisations and madrasas. Make sure the recipient is genuinely eligible and that ownership of the money passes to them.

Common Zakat Calculation Mistakes

  • Using purchase price for gold. Use today's market value on your Zakat date.
  • Deducting the full home loan. Only the instalment due now is usually deducted, not the entire remaining balance.
  • Forgetting bank deductions. If your bank deducted Zakat on 1 Ramadan, subtract it from the total you owe.
  • Ignoring jewellery worn daily. Under the Hanafi view followed by most Pakistanis, worn jewellery is zakatable.
  • Counting your house or car. Personal-use property is exempt.
Best practice: Choose a fixed Hijri date each year, keep a simple list of assets and debts, and run the calculator on that date with that day's gold and silver rates.

Methodology

How This Zakat Calculator Works

The calculator converts grams to tola (1 tola = 11.664 g), values gold and silver at the rates you enter, adds all other zakatable assets, subtracts current liabilities and compares the net total with the nisab of 52.5 tola silver or 7.5 tola gold. If the total meets the nisab, Zakat is calculated at 2.5%. These are the standard thresholds used by Pakistan's Ministry of Religious Affairs and most Pakistani fatwa institutions.

When Is Zakat Due? Understanding Hawl

Zakat becomes due when your wealth has stayed at or above the nisab for one full Islamic (lunar) year, called hawl. The Hijri year is about 354 days, roughly 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, so your Zakat date moves earlier on the calendar each year.

You do not need to track every rupee day by day. In the Hanafi view, what matters is that you were sahib-e-nisab at the start and end of the year; fluctuations in between do not break the hawl unless your wealth drops to zero. Many Pakistani families choose 1 Ramadan or 27 Ramadan as a fixed annual Zakat date because it is easy to remember and the reward of charity in Ramadan is greater.

Paying Zakat in Advance

Most scholars allow paying Zakat early, for example in instalments through the year, once you are sahib-e-nisab. On your Zakat date, calculate the full amount and pay any balance still owed.

Worked Example: A Salaried Family in Lahore

Ahmed and his wife calculate Zakat separately, because in Islam each adult owns their own wealth.

ItemAhmed (PKR)Wife (PKR)
Gold jewellery (22K, converted)04 tola ≈ 1,573,000
Bank balance650,00080,000
Cash at home40,00015,000
Committee paid in so far120,0000
Less: credit card bill due−60,0000
Net zakatable wealth750,0001,668,000
Zakat at 2.5%18,75041,700

Both are above the silver nisab of about Rs 320,000, so both owe Zakat. The 22K gold value uses 4 tola × 0.9167 purity × Rs 429,000. If Ahmed chooses to pay his wife's Zakat as a gift, that is permitted with her consent.

Zakat vs. Sadaqah vs. Fitrana

TypeObligationAmountWhen
ZakatObligatory (fard) for sahib-e-nisab2.5% of net zakatable wealthOnce every lunar year
Sadaqat-ul-Fitr (Fitrana)Wajib on each family member (Hanafi)Fixed per person, announced yearlyBefore Eid-ul-Fitr prayer
SadaqahVoluntaryAny amountAny time

Fitrana rates are announced each Ramadan by religious bodies in Pakistan based on the price of wheat, barley, dates and raisins. Fitrana is separate from Zakat and should not be deducted from it.
